CLF-C02 vs AZ-900: Which Entry-Level Cloud Cert Should You Take?

7 min read · Updated 2026-11-05

AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner (CLF-C02) and Microsoft Azure Fundamentals (AZ-900) are the two most-taken entry-level cloud certifications — the standard 'first cert' choices. They're remarkably similar in format and difficulty, so the decision usually comes down to which cloud your career path runs on, not which exam is easier.

Side-by-side basics

  • Cost: CLF $100 / AZ-900 $99 — effectively identical
  • Questions: CLF ~65 / AZ-900 ~40–60 — both in 60–90 minutes
  • Passing: CLF 700/1000 / AZ-900 700/1000
  • Format: both knowledge-only — no labs, no console access
  • Prerequisites: none for either — both designed for non-technical and technical beginners

What each exam emphasizes

CLF-C02 splits roughly: Cloud Concepts (~24%), Security & Compliance (~30%), Cloud Technology & Services (~34%), Billing & Pricing (~12%). AWS leans heavier on billing/pricing mechanics (support plans, pricing models, cost tools) than any other topic relative to its weight.

AZ-900 splits: Cloud Concepts (~25–30%), Azure Architecture & Services (~35–40%), Management & Governance (~30–35%). Microsoft leans harder on the service catalog — expect more 'which service does X' questions and more governance detail (management groups, Policy, Defender for Cloud) than CLF.

Difficulty — is one easier?

Both are passable in 2–4 weeks of part-time study for someone new to cloud. Most candidates rate AZ-900 marginally easier because the question phrasing is more literal, while CLF throws slightly more scenario-style 'which is the MOST cost-effective' questions. The difference is small — pick by career direction, not perceived ease.

Career value

  • Job postings: CLF appears more often — AWS has the larger market share and Cloud Practitioner is a recognized checkbox for sales, PM, and junior roles.
  • AZ-900 is the better pick if your employer (or target employer) is a Microsoft shop — enterprises on Microsoft 365/Entra overwhelmingly run Azure.
  • Neither cert alone lands a technical role — both are foot-in-the-door credentials; the associate-level cert (SAA or AZ-104) is what hiring managers weight.
  • Doing both is cheap and fast (~$200, ~1 month) and signals multi-cloud awareness — a reasonable play for consultants.

Which first?

Take CLF-C02 if you have no cloud preference — AWS vocabulary (EC2, S3, IAM) shows up everywhere, even in Azure conversations. Take AZ-900 first if you know you're entering a Microsoft environment — its governance content maps directly to enterprise reality.

Then ladder up: CLF → SAA-C03 for AWS; AZ-900 → AZ-104 for Azure. Our site has question banks, exam guides, cheat sheets, and study plans for all four.
